AR Pioneer Total Immersion Raised $5.5m

Augmented reality provider Total Immersion has announced yesterday a new round of funding of USD $5,5 million led by Intel Capital joined by existing investors Partech,iSource and Elaia Partners.

The company said that “the new funding will be used towards further development of the D’Fusion platform and to drive new usage of augmented reality (AR) for end-users. Specifically, the team will be focusing on expanding operations in Asia and in the US,developing a large community of developers and exploring new consumer markets.“

Total Immersion was created in 1999 and has been providing augmented reality solutions for digital marketing, events and consumer products. The company has however been a bit slow to enter the AR smartphone segment, launching its mobile platform,D’Fusion Mobile (Android and iPhone) in October 2010.

This funding will help the company regain the time lost in the mobile arena where companies such as Layar,Wikitude and Metaio have been very active in the last 2 years.

Interestingly Intel Capital had already led a €10 million round of funding for AR start-up Layar.
